Or build it yourself, for nothing

Paying is how this project gets funded, not how you get access. The source is open and the desktop build is a normal Flutter build — there is no licence check, no key, and nothing withheld from the build you make yourself. What $10 buys is the part that costs money and time: an Apple Developer ID, notarisation, a Windows certificate, and someone keeping the release pipeline working.

Verifying a download

Every release publishes SHA256SUMS.txt. On macOS and Linux: 

shasum -a 256 <the file you downloaded>

The macOS disk image is also notarised by Apple, so spctl -a -t open --context context:primary-signature <file>.dmg should say accepted.
